Working with the Northwest Marine Trade Association, the Washington State Legislature passed a law in 2011 requiring the phase out of copper-based antifouling paints on recreational vessels less than 65 feet in length by 2020. The law also required Ecology to evaluate how possible alternatives to copper-based paint affect marine organisms and water quality; the resulting report can be found here.
This webinar is an update, a year later, on current activities around this issue. Dr. Amelia Nestler from Northwest Green Chemistry will provide an update on ongoing alternatives assessment work looking at the potential impact of zinc oxide from these paints to Puget Sound, followed by a question and answer period. Dr. Brian Penttila from the Washington State Department of Ecology will also be available for questions. Register here.
