NGC is performing the first alternatives assessment based on recently developed and consensus-based frameworks for alternatives assessment. The WA State Alternatives Assessment Guide[LGH1] is intended for use by small and medium-sized enterprises and is a subset of the Interstate Chemicals Clearinghouse Alternatives Assessment Guide[LGH2] v1.0. And both of these guides are similar in scope and concept to the approach laid out in A Framework to Guide Selection of Chemical Alternatives[LGH3] developed by the National Research Council of the National Academies of Sciences.
NGC is an independent third party with expertise in science and stakeholder facilitation hired to lead the work to assess alternatives to copper in anti-fouling paints used for recreational boats. NGC is doing this by engaging stakeholders and by using the AA guidance to compare products based on hazard, exposure, cost and availability, and performance.
Learn more about NGC’s boat paint AA work and our plans to develop a Boat Paint Selection Guide to help boatyards and/or “do-it-yourselfers” find options for preventing fouling on their recreational boats while minimizing risk to themselves and to the salmon and other marine life in the waters that boaters so appreciate.
