Northwest Green Chemistry empowers businesses and entrepreneurs in the Northwest to be innovative and sustainable through green chemistry and green engineering practices. We provide education, services, and frameworks to drive innovation.
Alternatives assessment (AA) is a flexible tool that can be used by governments, industry, NGOs, and other organizations to drive a shift from products containing chemicals of concern to safer alternatives. AA is a flexible tool that supports ongoing product development and innovation. Clear guides break the process into discrete steps and modules, allowing the organization completing the AA to determine the optimal use of time and resources. Safer alternatives can involve simple chemical substitutions, complete product reformulations, shifts to new material platforms, or completely new and disruptive technologies.
Alternative Assessment (AA) Guides
Interstate Chemicals Clearinghouse (IC2) AA Guide: This guide was developed by the eponymous organization’s members and founded on the US EPA Design for the Environment (now Safer Choice) AA process.
Washington State AA Guide for Small to Medium Businesses: This guide is a subset of the Interstate Chemicals Clearinghouse AA Guide, aimed at smaller organizations with limited budgets by establishing minimum requirements and recommending a methodology for implementation.
A Framework to Guide Selection of Chemical Alternatives: This guide was developed by the National Academy of Sciences’ National Research Council.
NGC's Current AA Projects
Washington State Antifouling Boat Paint Alternatives Assessment: NGC is performing an alternatives assessment based on the Interstate Chemicals Clearinghouse Alternatives Assessment Guide, assessing alternatives to copper in anti-fouling boat paints.
Bridge Paint Alternatives Assessment: NGC is scoping current and emerging technologies for anticorrosive bridge paints. Contact us to learn more and participate.
Fluorinated Coatings on Compostable Food Containers: NGC is scoping current and emerging technologies suitable for grease-proof containers, including non-fluorinated coatings for traditional and novel materials, as well as innovative materials that are intrinsically grease-proof. Contact us to learn more and participate.
Engaging NGC for AA
Northwest Green Chemistry (NGC) specializes in Alternatives Assessments (AAs). The Washington State Antifouling Boat Paint AA that we are performing is the first whole-product AA based on the recently developed consensus-based framework from the Interstate Chemicals Clearinghouse (IC2).
As an independent third party, NGC is uniquely situated to bridge government and industry interests. NGC engages stakeholders throughout the AA process, ensuring that the criteria, metrics, and solutions are practical, addressing the needs of end-users and the realities that manufacturers face.
NGC utilizes an open and transparent process while maintaining confidentiality. By aggregating product-specific information and clearly detailing our criteria and metrics, decision makers can fully understand the depth and limitations of the assessment, while confidential business information is obscured.
